When you see a series of 3 red lights on the front of your Xbox 360 you have gotten the infamous Red Ring of Death (RROD). The RROD is the error with 3 Red Lights; not 4, 2, or 1 - even though some people might try and tell you that is so. Those Xbox errors are loosely related but aren't the RROD specifically, which is what this article will be dealing with. The RROD is an error that deals with your console overheating; thats all. Since this is the only real issue you will learn how to stop the overheating problem in your console and how the Xbox 360 needs to be properly fixed. This is the current and only known Xbox 360 3 red light fix as it has been learned that even the manufacturer is an unreliable source to resort to to get your console fixed.
Getting Started:
The repair outlined in this article comes from a repair that was first introduced by The Xbox 360 Red Light Fix Pro Repair Guide - one of the three best Xbox 360 repair guides that are currently circulating the internet. This repair is a safe, easy, and very effective method to resolving the RROD problem. It doesn't deal with towels, soldering guns, or pennies. This is the only legitimate repair that I've come across during my search for a permanent repair. So I would recommend that you use this very guide which will give you more detail, and video tutorials and all of the proper and necessary information that this article simply cannot provide you with. You can get that repair guide, here.
Step 1: Disassembling the console
The first step to repairing your console is to disassemble it. This is actually a very easy process as long as you are careful and take your time. The only parts that need extra care and attention is when removing the X-Clamps from the motherboard. To do this you will need a flat-heat screwdriver that you will place under the tips of the X-Clamps to lift and pry off the motherboard. For the rest of the disassembly refer to this article: => how to repair your xbox 360.
Step 2: GPU/CPU Modification
Next we will be using the specific thermal paste recommended by the above mentioned repair guide to modify the GPU and CPU. The GPU and CPU are two important computer chips that are responsible for running your system. They are improperly protected against the heat created by the Xbox 360. To properly protect them their old protection, a poor quality thermal paste, will need to be removed. This thermal paste can be removed using our special cleaning solution that came with the new thermal paste we got or we can just use rubbing alcohol, but that will take longer.
Simply put a drop on the GPU and CPU and then wipe away using a paper towel. After both the GPU and CPU are cleaned we will apply our new paste. Do this by cutting out a piece of plastic bag and wrapping it around your finger. Then apply a little dab onto your finger and apply. DO NOT touch the GPU and CPU with your bare finger, make sure the piece of plastic bag is covering your finger. We don't want to get any hand oils on the GPU and CPU after we've cleaned them.
Step 3: Heat Sinks Modification
After the GPU and CPU have been taken care of, the next step is to modify the heat sinks. The heat sinks are responsible for protecting the GPU and CPU and filtering out heat from getting to them. For some reason however when the Xbox 360 overheats the heat sinks fail to filter out the heat from getting to the GPU and CPU. This is thought to have something to do with the fact that the heat sinks are stabilized on a faulty foundation which were the X-Clamps.
The fix for this problems has been found to deal with removing the X-Clamps and then by using a set of specific washers and screws, you can use them to lock the Heat Sinks into place over the GPU and CPU which will allow it to filter out heat properly.
Step 4: Reassembly
The last and final step to fix an xbox 360 is to simply reassemble the console. Once those two modifications are finished the repair is complete. The repair guides mentioned above have a reassembly video that will walk you step-by-step through the entire thing so you'll be able to do it quickly.
And that basically sums it up for repairing the RROD. This repair is really simple, it actually fixes the RROD and takes about an 1 hour to do. So if you're looking for a way to fix your console then you've found it.
Good Luck with whatever you choose to do.
